01/ 20/ 2013: How victims of domestic violence can receive quality free legal aid services

The National network to end violence against women and domestic violence is working on amendments to the Law on Free Legal Aid within the project „Advocating for improvement of policies/ strategies to prevent violence against women”. For this purpose, a working group composed of six representatives from non-governmental organizations, members of the network who are lawyers and people who work long time on this issue was formed.

The working group held regular meetings for the past three months, and as a result letter „How victims of domestic violence can receive quality free legal aid services” was sent to Ministry of justice. Letter contained specific proposals to amend the specific articles of the Law on Free Legal Aid and was submitted to Mrs. Juliana Georgievska employed in the Ministry of Justice. The executive director of the National network, along with two representatives of the working group met with Mrs. Georgievska, on which were informed that the Ministry seriously accessed to reviewing the proposals from National network and they are high quality and professionally made ​​.

At the same time the Ministry of Justice, invited a representative from the National network to attend the meetings of the working group set up under the Ministry of Justice on which was scheduled to consider proposals for amending the Law on free legal assistance made ​​by the working group. The National network to end violence against women and domestic violence remains consistent for victims of domestic violence to ensure full, timely and effective care, and hopes that many of the proposed amendments will become part of the Law on Free Legal Aid and will contribute to the quality and functionality of it.
